Baji Prabhu Deshpande was a brave warrior and a commander of the Maratha Empire during the 17th century. He is remembered for his heroic actions in the Battle of Pavan Khind, a significant event in the history of India's struggle against the Mughal Empire.

Baji Prabhu was born in the Deshpande family in the village of Balaghat in present-day Maharashtra. He was a trusted lieutenant of Chhatrapati Shivaji, the founder of the Maratha Empire. Baji Prabhu played a crucial role in many battles fought by Shivaji, including the Battle of Pratapgarh, where he led the Maratha troops to victory against the Adilshahi forces.

The Battle of Pavan Khind, also known as the Battle of the Ghodkhind Pass, took place on July 13, 1660. It was a decisive battle in the ongoing war between the Marathas and the Mughals. The Mughals, under the command of Shaista Khan, had launched a surprise attack on Shivaji's capital, Raigad. Shivaji and his army were trapped on the fort, and the Mughals had cut off their access to supplies.

In an attempt to break the Mughal siege, Shivaji decided to lead a small group of soldiers through the treacherous Ghodkhind Pass to seek help from his allies. Baji Prabhu was chosen to lead the rear guard of 300 soldiers who would hold off the Mughal army and give Shivaji's group enough time to escape.

Baji Prabhu and his men knew that their mission was a suicide mission. They were outnumbered and outgunned by the Mughal forces, but they were determined to buy time for their leader. As Shivaji and his group disappeared into the darkness, Baji Prabhu and his men braced themselves for the final battle.

The battle lasted for several hours, and Baji Prabhu fought with incredible courage and determination. He and his men used their swords, spears, and bows to repel the Mughal attacks. Despite being severely wounded, Baji Prabhu continued to fight, inspiring his men with his bravery.

As the battle raged on, Baji Prabhu realized that his men were running out of ammunition. He knew that they could not hold off the Mughal army for much longer. In a final act of selflessness, Baji Prabhu decided to sacrifice his own life to ensure the safety of his leader. He instructed one of his soldiers to dress in his armor and carry his banner so that the Mughals would think that he was still alive and fighting.

Baji Prabhu then took a handful of soldiers and charged into the Mughal army. They fought fiercely, killing many Mughal soldiers before they were eventually overwhelmed. Baji Prabhu died in the battle, but his sacrifice gave Shivaji enough time to escape and regroup.

The Battle of Pavan Khind was a turning point in the war between the Marathas and the Mughals. It demonstrated the courage and determination of the Maratha warriors and their willingness to lay down their lives for their leader. Baji Prabhu became a symbol of Maratha valor and sacrifice, and his memory is still celebrated in Maharashtra today.

Today, I want to talk about one of the bravest warriors in Indian history, Baji Prabhu Deshpande. He was a true patriot who fought for the freedom of his motherland against the Mughal invaders. Baji Prabhu Deshpande is remembered for his selfless sacrifice in the Battle of Pavan Khind, which is a shining example of bravery and patriotism.

During the battle, Baji Prabhu Deshpande, along with a small group of soldiers, volunteered to stay behind and hold off the Mughal army while Shivaji and his troops could escape. Baji Prabhu Deshpande and his soldiers fought with all their might, inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy. They were outnumbered, outgunned, and facing certain death, but they did not flinch. They stood their ground, fought bravely, and gave Shivaji and his troops enough time to escape safely.

As the battle raged on, Baji Prabhu Deshpande was severely wounded, but he refused to give up. He continued to fight until the very end, and with his last breath, he uttered the famous words, "My king has crossed the mountain. I have kept my promise. Now I can die in peace."

These words encapsulate the spirit of Baji Prabhu Deshpande and his devotion to the cause of Indian independence. He was a true patriot who gave his life for his country, and his sacrifice will always be remembered.
